Leon Bazile Perrault

Leon Bazile Perrault

Léon Perrault painted children and young women with the smooth finish and sweet charm of the French academic school. His cherubs, nymphs and sleeping infants have soft, glowing skin and gentle expressions, very close in spirit to the work of his teacher Bouguereau.

Born in Poitiers, he trained with François-Édouard Picot and William Bouguereau and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863. His early work included history subjects such as The Death of Priam, but he soon found his success with genre scenes and pictures of children, which sold well to collectors in France and America. He died in Royan in 1908.

Cupid’s Arrows and A Water Nymph show his polished technique and his taste for light mythological themes.
