Gilbert Stuart

Gilbert Stuart painted the first six American presidents and created the image of George Washington that appears on the one-dollar bill. His portraits are known for fresh, glowing skin tones and lively, direct characterisation.
Born in Rhode Island, he studied with Cosmo Alexander and spent years in Britain, working in London under Benjamin West. His portrait The Skater brought him success there. Back in America he painted Washington several times, including the unfinished Athenaeum Portrait, and then about a thousand other sitters. His work is in the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Art.
His portraits of Abigail Smith Adams and Albert Gallatin show his quick, confident brush.
