Hyacinthe Rigaud

Hyacinthe Rigaud was the great portraitist of Louis XIV’s France. His grand portraits are full of velvet, ermine and swirling drapery, and his 1701 portrait of Louis XIV in coronation robes, in the Louvre, set the pattern for royal portraits across Europe.

Born in Perpignan, he trained in Montpellier and Lyon and moved to Paris in 1681, winning the Prix de Rome in 1682. He painted four generations of the Bourbon dynasty, along with nobles, clergy and wealthy merchants. There is a museum dedicated to him in Perpignan.

Gaspard de Gueidan Playing the Musette, in Aix-en-Provence, shows his skill with rich costume and a theatrical pose.
