Jean Frederic Bazille

Jean Frederic Bazille

Frédéric Bazille was one of the founding Impressionists. He painted figures outdoors in strong, clear sunlight, placing them in real landscapes, and his pictures are calm and solid, with bright colour and firm drawing.

He was born in Montpellier into a wealthy family and came to Paris to study medicine, but enrolled in Charles Gleyre’s studio, where he met Monet, Renoir and Sisley. He shared studios with his friends and helped them with money. His Family Reunion and The Pink Dress are in the Musée d’Orsay, and View of the Village is in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. He was killed in the Franco-Prussian War at 28.

African Woman with Peonies shows his skill with flowers and figure together. Aigues-Mortes shows his southern landscape. Look at the strong light.
