About Impressionist Flower Paintings
Flowers let the Impressionists study colour up close. Claude Monet painted "Bouquet of Sunflowers" in 1881 and later planted his garden at Giverny to paint it. Pierre-Auguste Renoir returned to vases of roses and mixed flowers throughout his life. In his final years Édouard Manet, often too ill for large work, painted a series of small flower pieces in glass vases.
Gustave Caillebotte was a keen gardener at Petit-Gennevilliers and painted orchids and chrysanthemums there.
