About Impressionist Boating and River Scenes
In the 1870s Parisians took the train to the river towns west of the city to row, sail and eat outdoors. Claude Monet painted "Regatta at Argenteuil" (1872) in bright, loose strokes of colour. Pierre-Auguste Renoir gathered his friends on a restaurant balcony at Chatou for "Luncheon of the Boating Party" (1880 to 1881), now in the Phillips Collection in Washington.
Gustave Caillebotte, himself a keen rower, painted "Boating on the Yerres" in 1877. These are sunny, sociable pictures, a good match for dining rooms, kitchens and living rooms.
