Johann Ender

Johann Nepomuk Ender was a Viennese portrait and history painter whose clear, elegant portraits recall the French miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabey.
He was born in Vienna in 1793, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there and travelled to Greece and Italy in 1818. Portraits were his main income, and he painted many members of the Hungarian aristocracy, including members of the Széchenyi and Károlyi families. He also painted religious works, including an altarpiece for St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and taught at the Vienna Academy from 1829 to 1850. His twin brother Thomas Ender was a landscape painter. He died in Vienna in 1854.
Allegory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences shows his link to Hungarian patrons.
