Joseph Karl Stieler

Joseph Karl Stieler

Joseph Karl Stieler was court painter to the kings of Bavaria and one of the best known German portraitists of his day. His portraits are clear and elegant, with carefully modelled faces set against simple backgrounds.

Born in Mainz, he studied in Vienna under Heinrich Füger and in Paris with François Gérard. He became court painter in Munich in 1820 and held the post until 1855. For King Ludwig I he painted the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace, a series of portraits of the most beautiful women of Munich. He also painted Beethoven and Goethe.

Helene Sedlmayr and Jane Digby, both from the Gallery of Beauties, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe show his calm, polished style.
