John Anster Fitzgerald

John Anster Fitzgerald painted fairies, and his fairy world is a strange one: tiny figures, birds, mice and goblins crowded into jewel coloured scenes of reds, blues and purples. Some pictures are sweet, others nightmarish, and they have been compared to Hieronymus Bosch. He was nicknamed “Fairy Fitzgerald”.

He was born in London in 1819 and was largely self taught. He first showed at the Royal Academy in 1845 and exhibited there for many years, and his pictures are now some of the most sought after in Victorian fairy painting.

Fairy Lovers in a Bird’s Nest Watching a White Mouse is typical: a tiny drama set among twigs and feathers, painted in minute detail.
