About Symbolist Paintings
Symbolist painters of the 1880s and 1890s turned away from everyday life towards dreams, myth and the inner world. Arnold Böcklin painted "Isle of the Dead" in five versions between 1880 and 1886, a boat gliding towards a rocky island of cypresses. Gustave Moreau painted Salome and other biblical and mythic women in jewel-like detail.
Odilon Redon moved from dark charcoal drawings to glowing pastels and oils of flowers and visions. In Brussels Fernand Khnopff painted "I Lock My Door upon Myself" (1891).
