About Scandinavian Landscape Paintings
Nordic painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries made their own landscape a national subject. The Norwegian J. C. Dahl painted mountains and storm-bent trees, as in "Birch Tree in a Storm" (1849). Peder Balke painted the coast of northern Norway in bold, near-monochrome strokes. Harald Sohlberg painted snowy peaks under a deep blue sky in "Winter Night in the Mountains" (1914).
In Finland Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted the still, reflecting water of "Lake Keitele" (1905).
