About English Landscape Paintings
English landscape painting grew from portraits set in the open air to a subject of its own. Thomas Gainsborough painted "Mr and Mrs Andrews" (about 1750) beside their fields in Suffolk. John Constable painted "Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds" (1823) framed by trees, and made many oil sketches of clouds.
John Crome of the Norwich School painted "The Poringland Oak", and J. M. W. Turner painted rivers, abbeys and castles across Britain.
