About Russian Landscape Paintings
Russian landscape painting came into its own in the second half of the 19th century. Aleksei Savrasov painted birds returning to birch trees in early spring in "The Rooks Have Returned" (1871). Ivan Shishkin painted pine forests in close detail, most famously "Morning in a Pine Forest" (1889), with bears added by Konstantin Savitsky. Arkhip Kuindzhi painted "Moonlit Night on the Dnieper" (1880).
Isaac Levitan painted a small church above a wide river in "Above Eternal Peace" (1894).
