About Romantic Seascapes
For Romantic painters the sea showed the power of nature. J. M. W. Turner painted an old warship towed to the breaker's yard at sunset in "The Fighting Temeraire" (1839). Caspar David Friedrich set a tiny figure before a vast grey sea in "The Monk by the Sea" (1808 to 1810). Théodore Géricault painted the survivors of a shipwreck in "The Raft of the Medusa".
Ivan Aivazovsky painted "The Ninth Wave" (1850), with survivors clinging to a mast in the glow of sunrise.
