About Neoclassical History Paintings

Neoclassicism rose in the late 18th century as a reaction to Rococo, looking back to ancient Greece and Rome. Jacques-Louis David painted three brothers swearing to fight for Rome in "Oath of the Horatii" (1784 to 1785), now in the Louvre. He painted the murdered revolutionary in "The Death of Marat" (1793), and Napoleon on a rearing horse in "Napoleon Crossing the Alps".

Angelica Kauffman and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres carried the style into portraits and mythology.
