About Scandinavian Summer Paintings

At the fishing village of Skagen in Denmark a colony of painters gathered in the late 19th century to catch the northern light. P. S. Krøyer painted his wife Marie and the painter Anna Ancher walking on the shore in "Summer Evening on Skagen's Southern Beach" (1893). Anna Ancher painted sunlight falling into quiet rooms.

In Sweden Anders Zorn painted "Midsummer Dance" (1897), with couples dancing through the light summer night.
