About Post-Impressionist Still Life Paintings
For Paul Cézanne the still life was a way to study shape and balance. In "The Basket of Apples" (about 1893) the table edges do not line up and the bottle leans, yet the picture holds together. His "Still Life with Apples and Oranges" (about 1899) piles fruit on a white cloth. Vincent van Gogh painted bottles, books and flowers in thick paint, and Paul Gauguin painted "Still Life with Three Puppies" in 1888.
