About Fauvist Landscape Paintings
In the summer of 1905 Henri Matisse and André Derain worked together in the fishing port of Collioure and painted it in pure reds, greens and blues. Matisse's "Open Window, Collioure" and Derain's "Mountains at Collioure" date from that summer. When their work was shown in Paris that autumn, the critic Louis Vauxcelles called the painters "fauves", or wild beasts.
Derain went on to paint the Thames in the same colours, as in "Charing Cross Bridge" (1906). Raoul Dufy and Albert Marquet painted Normandy beaches and harbours.
