About Pointillist Seascapes and Harbours
Georges Seurat developed pointillism in the 1880s, placing small touches of unmixed colour side by side. He spent summers on the Channel coast and painted harbours such as "The Channel of Gravelines, Petit Fort Philippe" (1890). Paul Signac, a keen sailor, took the method south and painted the port of Saint-Tropez many times.
Henri-Edmond Cross painted the Mediterranean in "The Golden Isles" (1891 to 1892), and Théo van Rysselberghe brought the style to Belgium. These are calm, sunny pictures with a light touch.
