About Art Nouveau Women
Art Nouveau flourished around 1900 with long, curving lines taken from plants. Alphonse Mucha made his name in Paris with the poster "Gismonda" (1894 to 1895) for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. His women, framed by circles and flowers, appeared on posters, decorative panels and calendars such as "Zodiac" (1896). Most of these originals were colour lithographs, and here they are painted in oil.
In Vienna Gustav Klimt painted women in gold and pattern, as in "Judith I" (1901).
