About Gold Paintings
Gustav Klimt's "golden phase" of the early 1900s is the best-known gold painting of all. He was struck by the gold mosaics he saw in Ravenna in 1903. "The Kiss" (1907 to 1908) in the Belvedere in Vienna and "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (1907) use gold leaf and pattern. Klimt's father was a gold engraver.
Centuries earlier, Italian painters set saints on gold grounds, as in Simone Martini's "Annunciation" (1333) in the Uffizi. Gold tones warm up a room and suit dark or neutral walls. A medium or large size gives the pattern room to show. A plain black or dark frame lets the gold stand out.
