About Colourful Paintings
In the decades around 1900, painters began to use colour for its own sake rather than to copy nature. Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin painted in pure, strong colour in the late 1880s, and Gauguin's Tahiti paintings, such as "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" (1897 to 1898), glow with it. Henri Matisse and André Derain pushed further in 1905.
Franz Marc painted blue horses and yellow cows, and Wassily Kandinsky moved to pure abstraction. Bright paintings bring life to plain walls, children's rooms and kitchens.
