About Grey-Toned and Monochrome Paintings
Grisaille is painting in shades of grey, often to imitate sculpture. Jan van Eyck painted the "Annunciation Diptych" (about 1433 to 1435) as two stone-like figures, and Ingres painted "Odalisque in Grisaille" as a grey version of his famous nude. James McNeill Whistler titled the portrait of his mother "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871).
The Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi painted empty rooms and closed doors in soft greys.
