About Blue Paintings
Blue was once one of the most costly colours, and artists have loved it ever since. Vincent van Gogh built "The Starry Night" (1889), now at MoMA in New York, from swirling blues around a yellow moon. Katsushika Hokusai printed "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (about 1831) with Prussian blue, a pigment then new in Japan.
Franz Marc painted "The Large Blue Horses" (1911), and Claude Monet's late water lilies are full of blue and violet. Blue paintings are calming and work in bedrooms, bathrooms and offices. They pair well with white, grey or navy interiors. A light or white frame keeps them fresh.
