About Dark and Moody Paintings
Some of the most powerful paintings are also the darkest. Caravaggio set bright figures against black backgrounds in Rome around 1600. Caspar David Friedrich painted a ruined abbey among bare oaks in winter in "The Abbey in the Oakwood" (1809 to 1810). Arnold Böcklin's "Isle of the Dead" shows a boat rowing towards a rocky island in the dusk.
James McNeill Whistler and Atkinson Grimshaw painted night and moonlight in deep blues and browns. Dark paintings suit rich wall colours such as navy, forest green or charcoal, and look best with a picture light. Studies, libraries and dining rooms are good places.
