Whistler’s Mother
An elderly woman sits on a chair, a curtain hanging in the picture with her: Anna McNeill Whistler, who posed while living with her son at 96 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, London. He had planned to paint her standing, but she found it too uncomfortable to stand for so long. Whistler called it an Arrangement in Grey and Black and asked why the public should care who the sitter was; a title naming his mother was added for Victorian viewers. The frame is of his own design.Whistler's Mother is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of James Abbott McNeill Whistler's work. Each piece is made to order, with full customization of size and framing to suit your space. Every reproduction is backed by our 90-day satisfaction guarantee, with free worldwide shipping.

The hand behind it
James Abbott McNeill Whistler
James McNeill Whistler believed painting should be like music: arrangements of colour and tone rather than stories. His titles say it: Arrangement, Symphony, Nocturne. His paintings are subtle and restrained, often built from greys, blacks and soft blues. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, studied briefly at West Point, then trained in Paris. He settled in London, where his Nocturnes of the Thames at night caused a scandal; the critic John Ruskin attacked them and Whistler sued. His portrait of his mother, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, was bought by the French state and is now in the Musée d’Orsay. Symphony in White, No. 1 is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Nocturne in Black and Gold, with fireworks over dark water, shows his most daring side.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Whistler’s Mother in a different size or shape?
Yes. Whistler’s Mother is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 144.3 x 163 cm (56.8 x 64.2 in).
