About Expressionist Landscape Paintings
Early 20th-century painters in Germany and Austria used landscape to show mood rather than a faithful view. Wassily Kandinsky painted the village of Murnau in Bavaria from 1908 in flat, glowing colour. Egon Schiele painted "Four Trees" (1917) against a banded autumn sky. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner moved to Davos and painted the Swiss mountains in pink, blue and violet.
In Norway Edvard Munch painted the shoreline and forests around his home with the same intensity he gave to people. These landscapes are bold and graphic.
