About Early Abstract Paintings

In the 1910s several painters broke with the idea that a picture must show something. Wassily Kandinsky built "Composition VII" (1913) from swirling colour and line. Kazimir Malevich showed "Black Square" in 1915. Piet Mondrian reduced painting to black lines and blocks of primary colour, as in "Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow" (1930).

In Sweden Hilma af Klint painted large abstract works from 1906, kept private in her lifetime. Abstract art fits modern and minimal rooms.
