John Joseph Enneking

John Joseph Enneking painted New England landscapes at the edges of the day: November twilight, early spring and autumn sunsets, with soft, glowing colour and a strong sense of atmosphere.
He was born in Minster, Ohio, in 1841, served briefly in the Civil War, and later studied in Munich and in Paris, where he worked with Charles Daubigny and Léon Bonnat. He settled in Boston and became one of the leading American Impressionist landscape painters there, working outdoors in all seasons. He died in Boston in 1916.
Autumn Sunset Through the Trees shows his favourite effect: low, warm light glowing through dark trees.
