Lazzaro Bastiani

Lazzaro Bastiani

Lazzaro Bastiani was a Venetian painter of the early Renaissance, known for altarpieces, Madonnas and scenes from the lives of saints. His pictures combine devotional figures with careful architecture and small, lively details of daily life.

Born in Padua, he worked in Venice from 1460. He was paid at the same rate as Giovanni Bellini and worked alongside Gentile Bellini on large paintings for the Scuola Grande di San Marco. He was the teacher of Vittore Carpaccio.

His scenes from the life of Saint Jerome are in the Accademia in Venice. Look at the Venetian buildings and the many small figures in his narrative scenes.
