Leandro Bassano

Leandro Bassano was the son of Jacopo Bassano and became the most successful portrait painter of his family. His portraits are smooth and fine, with cool, light colour, and his religious and genre scenes carry on the family style of crowded, detailed scenes.
He trained in his father’s workshop and later moved to Venice, where he painted portraits of doges, nobles and officials. He was knighted by Doge Marino Grimani in 1595 and signed his works as a knight. His portrait of Doge Marcantonio Memmo is one of his most notable.
His works are in the Prado, the Louvre and the National Gallery in London. Look at the faces in his portraits, painted with fine brushwork and a calm, cool light.
