Marco Basaiti

Marco Basaiti

Marco Basaiti was a Venetian Renaissance painter of religious scenes and portraits, known for his broad, detailed landscapes. His work bridges the early and High Renaissance in Venice, with the clear colour of Giovanni Bellini and landscape details influenced by Northern European painting.

He worked with Alvise Vivarini and completed an altarpiece Alvise left unfinished in 1505. His Call of the Sons of Zebedee of 1510, in the Accademia in Venice, is his best-known work, with figures set in a wide landscape. About thirty paintings by him are known.

His Portrait of a Young Man is in the National Gallery in London. Look at the landscapes, with their winding paths, rocks and distant hills.
