Mariotto Albertinelli

Mariotto Albertinelli painted calm, balanced religious pictures in the High Renaissance style of Florence: Madonnas, Annunciations and Nativities with clear figures, classical architecture and strong light. His best work is grand and serene, with a sculptural feel to the figures.
Born in Florence, he trained under Cosimo Rosselli, where he met Fra Bartolomeo. The two worked in partnership for years, sharing a studio and sometimes a picture. His Visitation of 1503, now in the Uffizi, is his best-known work, with two women meeting under a simple arch. He also taught younger artists, including Pontormo and Franciabigio.
His works are held in the Uffizi, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan and the Courtauld in London. Look at how he places figures within simple architecture to create a quiet, stable space.
