Giorgione

Giorgione changed Venetian painting in a very short career. His pictures are poetic and mysterious, with soft, smoky transitions of light, glowing colour and landscapes that set the mood as much as the figures do. Many of his subjects remain hard to explain.

He was born in Castelfranco Veneto in the late 1470s and trained with Giovanni Bellini in Venice. Only a small number of paintings are firmly his, including The Tempest (Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice), The Three Philosophers (Vienna) and the Sleeping Venus in Dresden, which Titian finished. His Judith is in the Hermitage. He died of plague in Venice in 1510, still young.

The Pastoral Concert in the Louvre is shared between Giorgione and the young Titian by scholars, and shows the dreamy, musical mood he made famous.
