Marcus Stone

Marcus Stone painted sentimental scenes of courtship and romance in graceful Regency costume, set in gardens and country houses. His pictures are gentle and full of small human dramas.
Born in London, the son of the painter Frank Stone, he trained with his father and was an illustrator for Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope. His early paintings were history scenes, but he found his lasting success with love stories. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1887, and his work was widely reproduced as prints. Tate holds his work.
A Stolen Kiss and Daydreams show his warm light and soft charm.
