Michael Peter Ancher

Michael Ancher painted the fishermen of Skagen, at the northern tip of Denmark, as heroes: big weathered men watching the sea, hauling lifeboats through the dunes or gathered on the beach after a rescue. He combined careful academic composition with natural colour and real faces from the village.
Born on the island of Bornholm in 1849, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and first visited Skagen in 1874. He stayed, married the local painter Anna Brøndum, and became a founding figure of the Skagen Painters. His breakthrough came with Will He Round the Point? in 1879, followed by The Lifeboat Is Carried Through the Dunes and The Drowned Man. A Christening, which we offer, is his well-known baptism scene. His work hangs at the Skagens Museum and the Hirschsprung Collection, and his house in Skagen is now a museum.
Look for the way he groups figures against open sky and sand, so the landscape feels as important as the people.
