Nikolaos Gyzis

Nikolaos Gyzis was the leading figure of Greek painters trained in Munich. His early genre scenes of Greek life are detailed and anecdotal, while his later work turns toward allegory and religious subjects painted with looser, lighter brushwork.
He was born on the island of Tinos in 1842, studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and from 1865 at the Munich Academy, where he later became a professor. He spent most of his life in Munich and died there in 1901. Well known works include The Secret School and News of Victory (1871), and his allegorical Eros and the Painter. His work is in the National Gallery in Athens.
After the Destruction of Psara shows his interest in episodes from the Greek War of Independence.
