Paul Gustave Fischer

Paul Gustav Fischer was known as the painter of Copenhagen. He filled his canvases with the life of the city: busy squares, bridges, trams, elegant women shopping, winter streets and summer bathing scenes on the beaches north of town.

He was born in Copenhagen in 1860, spent a short time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was otherwise largely taught by his father. A stay in Paris in the early 1890s brightened his palette and loosened his handling. He was commercially very successful and also designed posters. He died in 1934.

A View of Kongens Nytorv and A Street Scene in Winter, Copenhagen show his eye for weather, crowds and city light, while A Morning Dip belongs to his sunny beach pictures.
