Sándor Brodszky

Sándor Brodszky painted Romantic landscapes of his native Hungary and the Alps: stormy lakes, forests, rivers and ruined castles, often with small figures to give scale. His style belongs to the Vienna and Munich landscape tradition of the mid-19th century, with careful drawing and dramatic skies.
Born in Tóalmás in 1819, he first studied medicine in Pest before turning to art. He trained at the Vienna Academy from 1841 and then in Munich from 1845 to 1855. In 1856 he settled in Budapest and became a well-known landscape painter, exhibiting regularly. Some of his Hungarian views borrow the composition of Italian Campagna scenes. His Balaton in Storm (1857) is in the Hungarian National Gallery. He died in Budapest in 1901.
