Thomas Jacques Somerscales

Thomas Somerscales painted the sea and the ships of the Chilean navy. His marine paintings stand out for their careful detail of rigging and hulls and for their convincing waves and skies.

Born in Hull, England, he served as a schoolmaster in the Royal Navy and in the 1860s settled in Valparaíso, Chile, where he taught and began to paint seriously. He is best known in Chile for his scenes of the naval battles of the War of the Pacific, including the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Angamos. He returned to England in later life and died there. He remains far better known in Chile than in Britain.

A Barque Running Before a Gale shows his feel for wind and water.
