William Holbrook Beard

William Holbrook Beard painted animals behaving like people: bears dancing, monkeys reading, cats and dogs dressed up. His pictures are humorous and satirical, and many of them poked fun at human behaviour and politics.
Born in Painesville, Ohio, he studied in Europe, including in Düsseldorf, and moved to New York in 1861. He became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1862 and worked at the Tenth Street Studio Building. His paintings were widely reproduced as prints.
His works include scenes like Bears in the Watermelon Patch. Look at the animals’ expressions and poses, which mimic human manners.
