About Victorian Classical Paintings
In late Victorian Britain a group of painters set scenes in ancient Greece and Rome. Frederic Leighton painted a sleeping woman in glowing orange drapery in "Flaming June" (1895), now at the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. Lawrence Alma-Tadema was known for marble so convincing it seemed cool to the touch, and for "The Roses of Heliogabalus" (1888), with guests buried in rose petals.
John William Godward painted single women resting on marble benches by the sea.
