A travelling lecturer pumps the air out of a glass flask with a white cockatoo inside, and looks straight at us as if asking whether he should go on. Around the table, a young girl covers her eyes, a man times the experiment with his watch, and two lovers notice nothing. The only light is a candle hidden behind a glass bowl.
