The painting
The Alchemist Discovering Phosphorus
Wright exhibited this in 1771 and reworked it later. It recalls Hennig Brand, who found phosphorus in Hamburg in 1669 while trying to make gold. The old man kneels before a glass flask that has burst into white light, while two assistants work by a weak lamp behind him. The tall pointed windows and the moon outside make the room look like a chapel. The original is in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.Ours is painted by hand in oil once you order, in the size you choose, and you approve a photo of it before it ships.
