Alfred Stevens

Alfred Stevens

Alfred Stevens painted elegant women of modern Paris in quiet interiors, reading letters, lost in thought or dressed for a ball. His pictures are admired for their fine rendering of silk, lace and Japanese objects.

Born in Brussels, he studied there with François-Joseph Navez and then in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. He settled in Paris, where he was a friend of Manet and Degas, and he became one of the most successful painters of the Second Empire. His work is in the Musée d’Orsay, the Walters Art Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

A Pleasant Letter and After the Ball show his refined interiors and thoughtful women.
