Charles-Amable Lenoir

Charles-Amable Lenoir

Charles-Amable Lenoir was a French academic painter of portraits, mythological figures and religious scenes, in the smooth and polished style taught by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

He was born in Châtelaillon on the Atlantic coast and studied at the Académie Julian under Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, then at the École des Beaux-Arts. He won the Prix de Rome, second prize in 1889 and first in 1890, exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1903.

His pictures, such as A Dance by the Sea and A Nymph in the Forest, show young women in soft light, with idealised faces and gently flowing drapery, very much in the tradition of his teacher.
