Edward Henry Potthast

Edward Potthast is best known for sunny beach scenes: children paddling in the surf, families under umbrellas and bathers on the sand, painted in quick, bright strokes of colour.
Born in Cincinnati, he studied there and then in Munich and Paris before settling in New York in 1896. He worked as an illustrator and later devoted himself to painting, especially the beaches of Coney Island, Rockaway and Gloucester, as well as Central Park and New England landscapes. He is counted among the American Impressionists, and his work is held in the Brooklyn Museum, the Cape Ann Museum and the Delaware Art Museum.
Brighton Beach and At the Seashore show the dazzling light and happy crowds that made his name.
