Emanuel Phillips Fox

Emanuel Phillips Fox painted sunlight falling through leaves onto white dresses, parasols and garden tables. His figure pieces have the relaxed, outdoor feel of French Impressionism, with dappled light and soft colour.

He was born in Melbourne in 1865, studied at the National Gallery of Victoria school and then in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts. Back in Melbourne he co-founded a school of art that promoted painting outdoors, and later spent many years in London and Paris. Well known works include Art Students (1895) and The Green Parasol (1912). He died in Melbourne in 1915. The National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales hold his work.

Al Fresco and After the Bath show his love of light on skin and fabric.
