Fabio Fabbi

Fabio Fabbi painted Orientalist scenes full of colour and costume: harem interiors, musicians, fortune tellers and wedding processions, with silks, brass and patterned tiles described in careful detail.
He was born in Bologna in 1861 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Augusto Rivalta, later becoming a professor there. He travelled to Egypt, which gave him much of his subject matter. Besides painting he worked as an illustrator, producing pictures for editions of Virgil and Ariosto and for Italian translations of Dickens, Verne and Burroughs. He was made a knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy in 1892 and died in 1946.
A Wedding Procession and A Musical Interlude in the Harem show his taste for crowded, decorative compositions lit by warm Mediterranean light.
