Georges de La Tour

Georges de La Tour is the painter of candlelight. His best known pictures show one or two figures in a dark room, lit by a single flame that picks out faces, hands and simple geometric shapes, with deep silence all around.

He was born in Vic-sur-Seille in the Duchy of Lorraine and spent his career there, with a studio in Lunéville. He was successful in his lifetime and received the title Painter to the King in 1638, but after his death he was almost completely forgotten. Some of his works were even credited to other painters. The German art historian Hermann Voss rediscovered him in 1915. His paintings hang in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Boy Blowing at Lamp and Girl with a Brazier show his method in miniature: a glowing flame, a lit face and everything else in shadow.
